How About a Piece of Peace?

Enough is enough already; let’s get out of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq before we lose anymore young lives and bankrupt our country and our allies’ countries to boot. No wonder every time we announce that we are pulling out and letting local police keep the peace, something blows up and people die. The enemy or their governments, or both, want us to stay so we can spend yet even more young lives and money. We got the bad guys, now it's time to get the hell out!

I am as right-wing as they come, but there is something to be said about re-grouping closer to home and letting some countries take care of their own problems for a change. We all know it is really about oil, but if the truth be known, we would learn that there is enough of the ugly stuff in oil shale to last a hundred years right in our own backyard. Besides, the American people need to be taken care of first with jobs and a future. Screw the terrorists of any country. Make America strong again and the rest will fall in place.

I know, you think I am an idealist. That term is used to describe left-wing Democrats to get you to vote Republican. What I am is sick and tired of is watching our country go down the tubes due to unemployment, deficit spending and welfare programs for people here illegally. While we are spending billions of future dollars overseas for lost causes, people here are suffering. Middle and lower income folks are dying on the vine trying to carry the weight of all the government spending. Get off my back, damn it, and let me breathe!

There, I have said it, and it felt good. Of course, the weight is still pushing me underground, but at least I am going down kicking ass and taking names. Lord, please let me live long enough to vote someone in as president of the U.S.A. who will reign in our out-of-control government spending. Ronald Regan, please come back and help us kick some booty!

    I’m just screaming,

Veterans Day 2010

It doesn’t take a special day for me to remember our veterans, but on this Veterans Day, I would like to remember my father who lost his life during WWII. I vaguely remember his face; after all, I was very young when his B-17 went down at Davis-Montham A.F.B. in Tucson, Arizona. It was called the Army Air Corps at the time and he was carrying atomic bomb components destined for Japan when his plane’s tail section fell off. His name was Captain Walter Wigley and I remember the crash and explosion that followed. I also remember my mother and twin brother crying. At the time, I wasn’t sure why they were crying, only that it was expected…so I cried too.

My mother always made sure we were on hand when Dad was leaving on a mission. It wasn’t until many years later that I learned what the missions were and their significance in the surrender of Japan. To this day, his records are sealed.

It wasn’t long afterward that my mother married my dad’s best friend and we moved to California. My step dad was a Navy veteran and right up to his death of cancer in 1980, I could have not loved him more. He was the only dad I really knew and he treated us with love and respect.

Today is the first time I have officially remembered my veteran biological father on Veterans Day. I want him to know how much I appreciate his sacrifice for our country and freedom. I also want him to know how much I love him for being my father. I was truly blessed.

    I’m just saying,

From There to Here

The newest hobby my ex-Navy daughter has taken up is cooking from scratch while trying to juggle a full-time job and full-time studies at Northern Arizona University.

After a twelve-year stint in the Navy, which included a tour in Iraq, she is close to a college degree. When she left the service and joined her stepmother and me here in Camp Verde, Arizona, she had enough credits for most degrees, but unfortunately they were not the specific ones necessary. It is hard to take the proper classes when you are traveling around the world in a nuclear submarine tender and then on a nuclear aircraft carrier.

The positive side from my perspective is all the homemade food my wife and I get to enjoy because we have a ready- made chef less than a block away. There have been some disasters, but they are rare indeed. We discreetly dispose of failures while praising the triumphs.

I really don't know what we are going to do once she graduates and moves away into her future. We are really quite spoiled, you know. Perhaps a diet to start? Oh well, in the meantime; yum, can you bring more Cornish game hens, or how about some more biscuits? "Don't forget the mac and cheese," my wife calls out over my shoulder. And, I get the last word with; "cream cheese filled tarts would be nice."

After leaving for the walk back to her house, she is probably thinking, "Good grief, chief, what kind of food monsters have I created?"

    I'm just saying,

Tear of Grief

I am really confused. The Russians sent us a one hundred foot tall memorial to 9/11 in 2006 and it stands in New Jersey? Where was I when that happened, on another planet? I'm not a news nut, but I do keep abreast of the happenings around the world.

While we are still haggling about a 9/11 monument, our former cold war enemy, Russia, has created, erected and dedicated a monument in the USA that is not only beautiful, but significant in scope and stature, and brings tears to the eyes when viewed. It makes me wonder why we haven’t been able to build our own monument to 9/11. Could it be politics as usual?

Of course, President Putin is playing the political game too, but still—the monument is impressive and speaks volumes in its simple message. I, for one, thank the Russian people for the memorial that is now called, To The Struggle Against World Terrorism. I also thank my friend Sandy Cartwright, for sending me the pictures and story, and thus enlightening me yet again.
